Columbus Square Park Hoboken Proposal
I absolutely love proposals! When Devin asked me to photograph this special proposal at Columbus Square Park in Hoboken, I was so excited to not only document this once in a lifetime event but also to hear all about the story of how Devin and Karen met.
The Story
Devin entered Maxwell’s for his first Hoboken Grace connection event. He was so nervous that he almost left. It was his first event ever attending. Thankfully he didn’t. Little did he know, that he was going to meet his future wife Karen there.
It’s pretty amazing how such small moments can make such a huge difference, if Devin had left early they may not have met! Although they only started getting to know each other then, it wasn’t until a few months later at an apple picking connection event where they reconnected and became fast friends. I love this story of how their friendship grew into something so much deeper!
A week after returning from the Mexico mission trip in 2017 where they were serving the children of Casa Hogar, Devin and Karen went for coffee at Sweet and sat on Pier C after Hoboken Grace’s service. Devin: “The coffee was strong, the view beautiful and the company best of all”. Devin knew this was the right moment to let Karen know what he saw in her and finally asked her to dinner that week!
The Proposal
I met up with Devin to scout Pier C where he originally wanted to propose. With their dating history in mind, it would have been perfect but alas the rain couldn’t be stopped! Thankfully he chose Columbus Park as an alternative, which was close to his apartment. Devin truly thought of everything, he even arranged for both families to meet them after the proposal to celebrate their engagement. He convinced Karen to walk outside through the park on the way to “brunch” and the rest is history! See all the photos.
What makes Karen so special to you?
Devin: “Karen cares for people. I noticed that when we were becoming friends and it was what attracted me towards wanting to get to know her more. This manifested itself in our relationship in how we are able to care for the more challenging aspects of who we are without judgement but with love and grace. This is where we have grown the most together. I think going to Mexico together helps here as we see each other in weakness in reliance on our God and our team in accomplishing the mission of loving the children and each other through the week we are there.
When we started dating I would see how she would care for our friends. While I was busy preparing a meal for a dinner party, she would make sure every person was engaged and welcomed.”
Sisters
If you know Karen then you definitely have met her twin sister Cristina. They have the most amazing sister bond, you can immediately tell how close they are when you meet them. Devin was super thoughtful and made sure Cristina was there to witness that day! I am so glad we were able to take some photos of Karen and Cristina. How beautiful are they??? Seriously!
It is so evident how in love Devin and Karen are with each other. I just love the raw joy and emotion which you can see in every photo!
What are your favorite things to do together?
Karen: “We like going to the pier and relaxing. We also enjoy cooking/hosting dinner with friends. Devin cooks great Italian and I like cooking Latin food so we bonded a lot over sharing how to make cultural meals.More recently we developed a hobby for puzzles and watching movies; we have watched almost all of the marvel movies in the last 6 months.
We really enjoy spending time with our families whether it’s Sunday dinner with my sister or a night with my parents to weekends in Massachusetts with the Basile family.”
“There have been so many people in our community that have supported and guided us. We would be remiss if we didn’t allow that to shine bright through. I want to communicate the importance of our friends and mentors as we would not be here without their love.” – Devin
I love getting photos with my couples, this day couldn’t have been more perfect! Also shout out to Carol my second shooter and Johnny who did video!
